Perhaps taking a cue from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, "I Will Possess Your Heart" begins with a few aborted piano chords before delving deep into a long and winding instrumental intro. Guided by Nick Harmer's steady bassline and Jason McGerr's propelling drumming, this over 4-minute long intro never veers off course or becomes tedious. Rather the progressive building of instruments (masterfully produced by Chris Walla) keeps everything interesting and fraught with tension.
Death Cab for Cutie always had a romantic element to them, yet "I Will Possess Your Heart" brings in a darker tone. While the extensive intro personifies the rush of approaching someone ("How I wish you could see the potential/the potential of you and me"), the resulting rejection turns the song down a dark path. Ben Gibbard's voice, so sweet and almost puppy dog-like normally, fills with aggression and the lines "I will possess your heart" don't sound so romantic anymore. It marks a clear departure point for the band and though Narrow Stairs wasn't quite what I wanted it to be, "I Will Possess Your Heart" still remains a great achievement for Death Cab.
