Santi White used to be a hired hand for the likes of Ashlee Simpson and Lily Allen, writing songs which she would later comment as: "It's like two different hats that I have to wear. It's like the difference between writing fiction and writing ad copy. It's like a formula versus your art." As Santogold, White can practice her art and fire back at her years as a hired gun songwriter and A&R rep. Blending New Wave, hip-hop, Britpop and good old fashiond balladry, Santogold crafts a true gem of a song with "L.E.S. Artistes." Part tribute, part slam on the Lower East Side and some of its poser residents, Santogold's twitchy voice recalls Siouxsie Sioux, Terri Nunn and even Karen O. Mining New Wave's angular guitars and pop's soaring choruses, "L.E.S. Artistes" shows just why Santogold was in demand as a songwriter: the song is catchy as hell.
