44. Deerhoof "Chandelier Searchlight"

I'm the first to admit that Deerhoof isn't for everybody. They're a little weird: art-school tropes, music theory fascination, kooky little tics, a little bit of everything. Yet despite all that, they craft wonderful, offbeat pop songs that challenge and defy existing notions of what a pop song is. Take "Chandelier Searchlight" off of their delightful album, Offend Maggie: groovy bassline, prickly guitars as Satomi Matsuzaki sings sagely, carrying the song with her chirpy little voice. "Chandelier Searchlight" is bouncy, recalling Wire at times, but it's by no means conventional. Deerhoof throw a few curve balls giving the song an off-kilter feel but still undeniably catchy.
