43. MGMT "Time to Pretend"

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have crafted themselves a mighty fine pop outfit. Dolled up in eyeshadow, feathers, beads, ladies clothing so decadent they seem custom-made for Blanche Devereaux, MGMT revels in the trappings and ecstasy of the rock 'n roll lifestyle and unlike many other bands, they seem to be having a great time.

No song channels this energy quite like "Time to Pretend." Written about VanWyngarden's pet praying mantis [I know!], the song became a crazed out fantasy about becoming a rock star. Taking full advantage of being a rock star, fucking models, flying to Paris and "shoot some heroin and fuck with the stars," MGMT blurs the dangers and the excess to capture the unabashed exuberance of getting caught up in it all. It winds down of course and we're drawn back down with a desire to dig up worms and hang out with mom. Accompanied with a spacey, bubbling soundtrack, "Time to Pretend" allows you to live vicariously in the decadence - all to a tune you can dance to.
