10. M83 "Graveyard Girl"

In John Hughes' iconic 1985 film The Breakfast Club, Anthony Michael Hall's Brian Johnson left an essay stating who they thought they were on that Saturday: "we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basket case, a princess, and a criminal." The film is iconic because it managed to capture the angst prevalent in teenagers no matter their social ranking.

M83's "Graveyard Girl" may be about a Goth Girl [perhaps Ally Sheedy?] yet her disillusionment and frustration could easily be appropriate for the trapped Claire [as played by Molly Ringwald] or even Andie from Pretty in Pink. Whomever the song might be for, Anthony Gonzales crafted a gorgeous, romantic song evocative of the best New Wave songs. With cinematic synths, soaring guitars and thundering drums, "Graveyard Girl" is 80s pop perfection: all melodrama and overblown emotions. Complete with Morgan Kibby's mid-song monologue stating "I'm 15 years old and I feel it's already too late to live. Don't you?", "Graveyard Girl" is for all the angst-ridden teenagers.
