With pounding, propelling drums, "Fools" sounds like an audition for Animal Collective. With a foundation based on West African ewe drumming, "Fools" is a tightly wound, verging on chaotic song exemplifying all that makes San Francisco's own The Dodos so great. An elaborate arrangement swings between magnetic acoustic strumming and ferocious electric guitar outbursts. Breathless in its relentless pace, The Dodos weave in hopelessly melodic harmonies, rhythmic shouts, and ghostly backing vocals. With so much happening in one song, it's amazing that they can keep it all in check, more so that it sounds so effortless and graceful.
