He goes to Chez Panisse to prepare it.

In related news, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans is amazingly over the top. So good.

Los abrazos rotos

Last Sunday I went to see Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embraces with David and we both left the theater feeling a bit underwhelmed with the film.

A few days later, I find myself going back to Almodovar's film - reviewing the plot in my head, specific scenes, moments that have stayed with me. My original criticism of it feeling like Almodovar was holding back feels a bit trite now - was it not melodramatic enough? Perhaps another viewing is in order.

In the end, I feel that I initially didn't give Penelope Cruz enough credit. It's due to her melancholic performance that I keep thinking about the film. Thinking about it more, I realize that it is less about the love affair, the intrigue but rather Almodovar's love letter of sorts to cinema. While I wouldn't say Broken Embraces is Almodovar's best (I'm quite partial to All About My Mother), it's stayed with me in a way that I did not anticipate.

Medicine for Melancholy

Yesterday I saw a really great film, Medicine for Melancholy (dir. Barry Jenkins). It's set in San Francisco and has some of the most real and beautiful shots of San Francisco I've ever seen. It's technically a romance, but it's incredibly smart and insightful on issues of gentrification, being black in San Francisco (7% of the population and dropping) and being a person of color identifying as "indie." It is extremely nuanced and Tracey Higgins and Wyatt Cenac (yes, from "The Daily Show") are really good.

It premiered last year at the SF Film Festival and I wasn't able to go and I've been waiting for it to come out this whole time. A year, basically. Anyway, I highly encourage people to go see it. It got a rave in the New York Times by A.O. Scott!

"I Can Read Movies" series

Designed by a group of artists over at Spacesick, these vintage-looking fake book covers use films as their subject and the results are really awesome.

For more images, visit here and apparently the next 25 will be posted on their blog.
