25. Bon Iver "Blood Bank"

And I know it well

The devastating emotional power of For Emma, Forever Ago could have been a fluke, it could have been an album that would and could only occur once based on the circumstances that created it and it would have been ok. It would have been ok for Justin Vernon to create one beautiful piece of work; it would have been enough for it to have existed.

Fortunately for fans, this was not to be. The Blood Bank EP proved that was no fluke, and no more so than the titular track. The wintry setting, the quiet moment of a couple warming their hands inside a car leading to a kiss, Vernon fills the song with beautifully evocative imagery. The downbeat tempo of the song, the heartbeat rhythm leading to a clamorous outro and a chorus of and I know it well, gives "Blood Bank" a somber tone - the happy ending seems a bit far off here. It is the somberness, the quiet moments that give fleeting joys that Vernon excels at conveying. The creaks and timbres of the guitars evoke the fragility of relationships and it is here, where Vernon succeeds: delicate relationships conveyed not just by lyrics but the music itself.
