Oh, I wish I had a boyfriend
Much has been made of Girls' bold move of swiping Iggy Pop's iconic song title - but let's get real, that's just fodder for the obsessive record collectors out there (myself included). Pop's "Lust for Life" was about druggy excess and getting fucked up, but Girls' version is essentially about being a fuck up, about being an aimless twenty-something with not much to do other than write songs about being an aimless twenty-something. Girls' "Lust for Life" is not about dramatic excess but simple needs or wants - a boyfriend, a pizza, a bottle of wine. The beauty of the song is that Christopher Owens reveals that below these needs/wants, there is an undercurrent of sadness, of an upbringing devoid of such things: I wish I had a father / Maybe then I would've turned out right. The jangly guitars and sunny melodies are cheeky and inclusive and the sun dappled videos have the casual breeziness of an afternoon in the Mission. The great thing about Girls' "Lust for Life" is that yes, there's a glimpse of Owens' personal life but at the end of the day, there's something inclusive about it. Wanting a boyfriend, pizza, wine - who hasn't thought that? The lack of pretension and the catchy riffs all underscore that "Lust for Life" is ultimately not about Owens' life, but anyone's.
