You and me could write a bad romance
Recently I've found myself fiercely defending Lady Gaga and her over the top performance art to more than a few skeptics. 'Those costumes!' I exclaimed, 'they can't just be for show. There's something deeper happening here, something more than pure spectacle.' I can't tell if I've converted those skeptics but I've certainly solidified my stance on her. Her flamboyantly dramatic flair, exposing and satirizing fame, art, femininity and sexuality all while spinning pop gems, it's pop performance art.
All of these elements came of a fabulous head in "Bad Romance," a pop song so deliciously over the top and so earwormingly good that it was hard to ignore, even for the skeptic. The track is epic, telling the tale of a love so bad it's good - a drama that's been told countless times but here there's a dirtiness to it, a savage neediness that makes it unrelenting and fascinating. The best part of Lady Gaga's persona/performance is that she is wholly unapologetic and it's wonderfully carnal, energetic, and completely brave. Simply put, unlike anything else on pop radio.
