17. Metric "Help, I'm Alive"

They're gonna eat me alive

Metric's Emily Haines has always been sultry and alluring - that's not new. But as soon as she coos I tremble, there's a stunning vulnerability just revealing itself. Perhaps it was due to Haines' ballad-filled solo effort, Knives Don't Have Your Back that inspired a bit more romance, more aggression, more period. "Help, I'm Alive" has big hooks, pounding drums, more swagger than any previous Metric songs. The rock-disco sheen of "Combat Baby" and "Empty" is still there, barely containing a brazen sexuality. Yet there's also nervousness, anxiety as Haines' heart pounds, displaying vulnerability and humanity under the sheen. She may protest, worry that they'll eat her alive, yet "Help, I'm Alive" is pounding with nervous energy all while performing a sleek sexuality - the cracks in the disco's mirror.
