Medicine for Melancholy

Yesterday I saw a really great film, Medicine for Melancholy (dir. Barry Jenkins). It's set in San Francisco and has some of the most real and beautiful shots of San Francisco I've ever seen. It's technically a romance, but it's incredibly smart and insightful on issues of gentrification, being black in San Francisco (7% of the population and dropping) and being a person of color identifying as "indie." It is extremely nuanced and Tracey Higgins and Wyatt Cenac (yes, from "The Daily Show") are really good.

It premiered last year at the SF Film Festival and I wasn't able to go and I've been waiting for it to come out this whole time. A year, basically. Anyway, I highly encourage people to go see it. It got a rave in the New York Times by A.O. Scott!
