6. Lupe Fiasco "Gold Watch"

I staunchly believe that Lupe Fiasco is one of hip-hop's most underrated MCs. Yeah, he gets lots of praise from alternative press but this guy isn't selling nearly as much as someone like Lil' Wayne is nor getting the kind of attention his compatriot Kanye West is getting. While other songs on his fantastic album The Cool speak to larger issues about hip-hop, "Gold Watch" is about the materiality of the genre. Like any other guy his age, Fiasco cops to being into video games ["I love Street Fighter 2, I just really hate Zangief/ Only Ken and Ryu/ I find it hard to beat Blanka"], manga and UNKLE, yet Fiasco makes it clear that those are merely possessions. It's refreshing to hear given the preoccupation with material possessions that pop music has. Better yet "Gold Watch" also utilizes a great sample of girls playing/talking that rides through the entire song. Creating a laid back vibe, Lupe Fiasco revels with his cool delivery and comes through with a genuine gem of a track.
