1. Bon Iver "Skinny Love"

It completely snuck up on me. I wasn't expecting "Skinny Love" to become my favorite song of 2008. To knock down Beyonce, Fleet Foxes or TV on the Radio. It begins unassumingly with simple strums of the acoustic guitar yet it was Justin Vernon's achingly vulnerable vocals that did me in. I had nearly dismissed For Emma, Forever Ago as being a little delicate for my ears but I had never been so wrong. Yes, it is just Vernon in a cabin with his guitar but I've never heard anything that packed such an emotional wallop like "Skinny Love." It's heartbreaking in every sense of the word, I've teared up nearly every time I heard it. It's not a song you merely listen to but feel. Vernon manages to fill a wealth of crushing heartbreak and loneliness in a song of delicate melodies. "Skinny Love" touched on every heartache I had ever felt and simply put, it touched my soul.

A fine performance on "Later with Jools Holland"
