49. Gregory and the Hawk "Doubtful"

Twee: affectedly or excessively dainty, delicate, cute, or quaint twee or corny. (courtesey of the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

Twee music can often be nauseatingly cute - the cooing voices, the so-childlike-it's-almost-rudimentary-style of playing instruments, and the sweet, innocent lyrics. I'll admit that I will often go off into the land of Twee from time to time (there ain't nothing wrong with jammin' to Belle & Sebastian), but there will be the band that will wear my tolerance for Twee thin. COUGHTheBoyLeastLikelyToCOUGH

Oh excuse me.

New York-based, Gregory and the Hawk can certainly be categorized as Twee, but it's never nauseatingly so. Meredith Godreau's sweetly high-pitched voice is counter-balanced with aggressive, militant drumming by Adam Christgau and steady, steering guitar work by Mike McGuire. "Doubtful" begins with Godreau singing over a cutesy guitar refrain, but the song quickly evolves to what sounds remarkably like a Photo Album-era Death Cab for Cutie fronted by Lisa Loeb. The sturdy and commanding instrumentation keep the cute at bay and makes "Doubtful" a wonderful listen.
