40. Vampire Weekend "Oxford Comma"

As I was standing, waiting for Vampire Weekend to begin their set at the Treasure Island Festival this year, I gazed at the crowd of young hipsters wondering, do they even know what an Oxford comma is? [For a surprisingly large Wikipedia entry, click here.] Ok, so not knowing what an Oxford comma is doesn't hinder any enjoyment of the song itself. English dramas, meeting the lama, accents, the United Nations and Lil' Jon too? A study in throw-away pop culture references and casual use of the word "fuck," "Oxford Comma" is an effortlessly mashing of high and low brow references. It seems that being a prep is all the rage now [see: Kanye West and Jay-Z's new glasses] so it makes sense for a quartet of Columbia University grads to garner all the hype. With simple, Afro-inflected pop songs like "Oxford Comma" they are one band that actually deserves it.
