34. The Decemberists "Valerie Plame"

Those charming Decemberists! Leaving aside the Crane wives, seafaring scally-wags, engine drivers, and barrow boys for the world of secret CIA operatives. Timed to the last months of George W. Bush's disastrous tenure and election day, "Valerie Plame" is an ode to the titular former CIA agent outed by conservative columnist Robert Novak in 2003. Sung in the point of view of Plame's inside contacts discovering her true identity, the song is also an amorous tribute. Chief Decemberist Colin Meloy commented on how great Plame's name sounded and that is was a perfect name for a song and he's not kidding. Valerie Plame rolls off the tongue with gusto and the song is catchy and endearing, banjos and a sing-along to boot. In other words, your typical great Decemberists song.
