I love pop music, I love my sad bastard folkie music, I love hip-hop, I love smart rock, but every once in a while I want Rock with a capital R. Vancouver-based Black Mountain fills in that role quite well. Deep and sludgy, Black Mountain's music is a throwback to all those great 70s era rock bands that are now subject to being mangled by Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Lead track "Stormy High" is something straight off of a Sabbath record, complete with wailing female vocalists [Amber Webber, making quite a show on this album]. Yeah, they can be labeled as Stoner Rock but that's not giving them enough credit. "Stormy High" is dark, heavy and otherworldly and believe it or not, really damn sexy; credit that to Stephen McBean's throaty voice coupled with Webber's harmonies. The song also has what may be the best guitar riff of the year, indeed Rock with a capital R.
