23. Fleet Foxes "Ragged Wood"

Abandoning traditional and expected song structures, Fleet Foxes delivers a rambling stunner with "Ragged Wood." Energetic opening verses giving way to a meandering, hushed extended coda and back again to soaring group harmonies. Sounding neither rushed or pasted together, each transition is entirely natural and sweeps the listener in each theme explored. Robin Pecknold and company craft a lovely, homespun epic that is familiar and comforting. "Ragged Wood" is every bit as spirited and lovely as their other standout track, "White Winter Hymnal." For a song with so many intricate parts, it never feels forced or contrived, it's the musical equivalent to a cozy throw.
