15. Shearwater "Rooks"

Right now Shearwater may live in the shadow of Okkervil River yet as long as they crank out albums like the fantastic Rook, they can outgrow that shadow. Rook mines country, AM rock, and folk traditions powerfully and with dramatic ease. Not really a title track per se, "Rooks" is a study in fine songwriting. Exquisitely crafted, "Rooks" features nimble and memorable guitar plucking and Jonathan Meiburg's voice is just stunning. Using the imagery of disturbed birds as an allegory for the apocalypse, the song is filled with dark undertones yet it is also breathtakingly beautiful. As the song reaches its end, it resists an intense, cathartic big finish for a simple, singular chord echoing into the ether. Nearly the musical equivalent to Cormac McCarthy's The Road.
