Dragon Ladies and Lotus Blossoms

For Queer Theory, I'm revisiting the 1961 musical Flower Drum Song. It is a highly problematic film for its questionable representations of Asian Americans, yet it's full of camp value and some ridiculously catchy show tunes. For this paper I'm examining how certain models of the female gender and stereotypes of Asian women are being reinforced and reiterated though the female characters of Linda Low (Nancy Kwan) and Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) and how those models are problematized through the character of Helen Chao (Reiko Sato).

I'm using a lot of Judith Butler, who I'm finding to be a really interesting read, and sifting through a lot of the film's song lyrics. Of course, I'll be examining what is probably the most famous song "I Enjoy Being A Girl." Talk about gender performativity.
