38. Adele "Chasing Pavements"

One of the great, enduring genres of music is the torch song. Typically a song of unrequited or lost love, the structure is usually based on jazz, soul or blues music and is frequently sung by a female vocalist. There are plenty of love songs and plenty of heartbreak songs, but there's something extra special about the torch song.

19-year old Adele Laurie Blue Adkins brings her own version of the torch song with "Chasing Pavements." Lyrically, the song doesn't quite transcend teenage heartbreak yet the soaring chorus and strings make you forget any lyrical shortcomings. Adkins' voice is smoky and sultry beyond her 19-years blending in well with the retro soul sound. It's not a perfect song, yet it is a lovely and intense torch song with a chorus that blows away the competition.
